NPDA studio constructs a red brick retirement home in thailandall images by anotherspace

this red brick building in thailand’s surat thani province has been designed to serve two specific functions — a retirement home for its owner, and a reception for guests at the region’s coco-nutnume resort. completed by nutthawut piriyaprakob of NPDA studio, ‘somjai house’ is clad with locally sourced brick and polished concrete, materials which not only help cool the property, but also allow it to stand out against the green of the surrounding coconut plantation.

internally, the scheme consists of a master bedroom with en-suite bathroom, guest sleeping accommodation, and a pantry for family cooking. the main hall serves as a flexible multi-purpose space that can be used as a living room, a venue for parties, a coffee shop, or even a yoga area. meanwhile, an upper deck provides panoramic views of the surrounding plantation, the sea, and the neighboring hills.

the dwelling’s roofline relates to the rugged form of the surrounding landscape, but also assists wind flow, naturally cooling the site. the building’s front façade has been designed to present sweeping sea views, while enclosed porches help protect the building from the region’s hot sun.
